... what not to say to the crying patient who has just called in to let you know that her IUI failed. Just an FYI, for all you nurses out there.

(By the way, the patient responded, "And sometimes you don't.")

  4. Oh Ellen, I'm so sorry both for your disappointing news and for the insensitive uninformed nurse. FYI: the rates of spontaneous pregnancy for women who adopt after infertility are not statistically different than those that do not adopt. Unless you're a TV sitcom. Also, if you do decide to pursue adoption instead or in addition and want someone to talk to I'm always available.

  8. What a jerk. My mother worked in a hospital for most of my life, and is still a practicing nurse and she has no problem speaking her mind. I think in this case scenario she would tell that person off to their face. I'm so sorry that person was an insensitive jerk-wad.

    I'm in a better place today.

    I don't know what made me more angry... the complete wrong timing of the comment, the insensitivity or the fact that there is NO "just" to the adoption process. It was just all yucky.

  16. They said that to me too. Call the doctor and raise hell, do not accept the nurse's attempt to cheer you up.
    I did adopt.
